Van Basten stepping down after Euro 2008

Van Basten took over from Dick Advocaat following Holland's semi-final defeat to Portugal in the Euro 2004.

MADRID - Marco van Basten's decision to step down as Holland coach after Euro 2008 has come as no surprise to midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Van Basten informed the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) of his decision at a meeting on Tuesday after four years in charge of the team.

And Real Madrid star Sneijder agrees it is the right time for the coach to step aside.

"I am not surprised about the coach's decision," Sneijder told AD Sportwereld.

"He has worked with the national team for four years and I can therefore understand he is ready to do something else.

"Van Basten is at the start of his career as coach and I think he wants to train a club.

"Is this good for the group? I think so. After four years it's never wrong to have someone else take charge of the group with a totally different vision.

"That can be a good thing. I don't mean Van Basten hasn't been capable, we worked well together over the last few years. We qualified for two tournaments and so far the results have also been quite good."

The Dutch eased their way through their Euro 2008 qualifying group, finishing second in Group G behind Romania.

They also advanced to the World Cup finals in 2006 under Van Basten's stewardship but were beaten in the last 16 by Portugal.
