US men's national team names 28-man roster ahead of pre-Gold Cup friendly

US men's national team head coach Gregg Berhalter has named a 28-man roster ahead of a pre-Gold Cup friendly against Jamaica on June 5 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. (7 pm ET | FS1, UniMás, UDN). The final 23-man roster for the tournament is due by midnight following the game and will be announced on June 6.

“After a great week of training, we now enter the phase of playing competitive matches,” Berhalter said in a statement distributed by U.S. Soccer. “The game against Jamaica will represent an opportunity for us to evaluate new prospects as well continue to develop the group for the Gold Cup. We are excited about the group coming in and the opportunity ahead of us this summer.”

Seventeen MLSers are in the 28-man squad, which is headlined by longtime US stalwarts Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley of Toronto FC, as well as Manchester City-bound goalkeeper Zack Steffen, the presumptive first-choice goalkeeper. The Columbus Crew are the team that have the most representatives on the roster with three (Steffen, Gyasi Zardes and Wil Trapp), while four more MLS teams feature two players on the roster: LAFC, the San Jose Earthquakes, Toronto and the Seattle Sounders. There is one player on the roster for the Jamaica friendly not on the provisional Gold Cup roster, Earthquakes midfielder Jackson Yueill.

Two notable names not on the roster for the Jamaica friendly — Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams — are expected to be named to the Gold Cup roster and will arrive later in camp. Following the friendly vs. Jamaica and final Gold Cup roster announcement, the US will play one more friendly against Venezuela on June 9 in Cincinnati before kicking off their Gold Cup campaign against Guyana in Minnesota on June 18.

Four players on the roster could earn their first caps for the US vs. Jamaica: goalkeeper Tyler Miller, midfielders Duane Holmes and Yueill, and forward Tyler Boyd, who recently completed a one-time switch to represent the United States at the international level.
