Timbers Army show their support for Orlando, LGBT community

Providence Park shot

The Timbers Army warmed some hearts during Portland’s 2-0 US Open Cup win against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night, displaying a rainbow-lettered “Orlando” banner at Providence Park in the wake of the mass shooting that killed 49 people at a LGBT nightclub in the Florida city early Sunday morning.

The TA’s tribute will likely be just one of many seen around the American and Canadian soccer landscape this week.

Orlando City, who play at the NASL’s Jacksonville Armada in the Open Cup on Wednesday, announced Tuesday that they are dedicating their home MLS match against San Jose on Saturday to support #OrlandoUnited efforts.

More details on Orlando City’s efforts, which include a $100,000 donation from the club’s Orlando City Foundation to the City of Orlando’s OneOrlando fund and a 30-second stoppage of play for a moment of silence during the match, can be found here.
