Teams pass on waived players

  • Clubs release 49 players for waiver draft >

All 12 Major League Soccer teams chose not to make any selections in a waiver draft held via teleconference on Wednesday, one day after 49 players were released from their respective clubs. Per MLS waiver regulations, each club will retain the rights to the players that it waived on Tuesday for the next 12 months.

All clubs are now left with several holes in their 28-man rosters. With the league's end-of-season roster freeze now over, those holes could start to be filled immediately, and action should pick up during the opening of the FIFA international transfer window from Jan. 1 to March 31.

  • In addition, the MLS roster and salary budget compliance date for the 2006 season is set at March 1. On that date, all MLS teams must consist of no more than 18 senior roster players, 10 developmental roster players and four senior international players.

MLS will hold its annual Player Combine on Jan. 12-15 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The 2006 MLS SuperDraft will follow on Jan. 20 in Philadelphia, held in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America conference.
