Sporting Kansas City secured two important members of their midfield on Monday after the club announced that both Soni Mustivar and Paulo Nagamurahave signed new contracts with the team.

Mustivar had an impressive debut campaign in MLS last season as he led the team to a 15-5-6 record when he started and his impact was acknowledged by the club giving him the Co-Defender of the Year award (along with long-time stalwart Matt Besler).

Mustivar played a key role in the club’s run to the US Open Cup title as he started all five matches en route to the penalties win over the Philadelphia Union. He also set an MLS record (in the Opta era) having made 20 interceptions in a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on July 12. The France-born 25-year-old is a Haiti international, having racked up nine caps for the national team.

Nagamura (pictured above) was a free agent but decided to return to Kansas City, having spent four years with the club. He’s a two-time MLS Cup winner (winning with LA in 2005 and Sporting in 2013) and a three-time US Open Cup winner. The 32-year-old started his career at Sao Paulo FC and Arsenal before joining MLS in 2005.
