Revolution 2, Red Bulls 0 -- quote sheet

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 2, NEW YORK RED BULLS 0

NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH BRUCE ARENA
On the overall performance:
"My frustration is with the team on the field tonight. They played poorly in large segments of the game, had too many mental breakdowns. The technical breakdowns happened but it seems like it has been a struggle since I've been here as well as obviously the season.

"There was an effort at times for 90 minutes. Effort is one thing, but to be able to grow throughout the season and grow from game to game, it just doesn't seem we have enough players that can do that and tonight it showed that."

On the first 20 minutes:
"I think a little bit more urgency at the opening kickoff tonight would have helped. I think guys are tentative. I just thought our first 20 minutes was very poor tonight. I don't think we gave ourselves a chance in the first 20 minutes to be a team that could try to take the initiative in the game. Shocking display on the ball, lack of confidence by our players in the first 20 minutes."

On Marvell Wynne's performance:
"For whatever reason he is much more comfortable playing out of a 3-5-2. He's a young kid and he's got a long way to go, but in defense of Marvell the last couple of games Marvell has shown improvement."

On the difference between the young players and the veterans:
"We have some young players and they're going to make mistakes; we expect that, other players are not able to pick up the slack."

On Markus Schopp:
"One of the bright spots tonight was certainly Markus Schopp. I thought he showed that he is going to be a quality player, however we realize this year that it is going to be hard to get him to a point were he is going to play 90 minutes. He's a player that we think next year is going to be important for us. We're obviously going to try and get as much out of him as we can this year."

On the difference between the Red Bulls and New England:
"We did play a few players out of position tonight by necessity, that doesn't help either. I think the other team has more quality players and more experience. I think the performances by Taylor Twellman and Clint Dempsey were outstanding tonight, and [Andy] Dorman. The way they controlled the game from their positions I thought was pretty impressive."

On Amado Guevara and Youri Djorkaeff:
"I don't think Amado played particularly well; he didn't help us on either side of the ball tonight. Youri was OK. I think he can help us keep the ball a little bit better. At times he has to come back too deep to get the ball. In the first half the passing was very poor, and if we can't pass better behind Youri, it forces Youri to get further and further away from the goal."

On the rest of the season:
"We're going to continue to push them as hard as we can over the next four games. In reality they're a point behind fourth place. They've got to somehow between and the end of the year and be a minimum of a point better than Kansas City."

NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER AMADO GUEVARA

On being subbed out for Blake Camp:
"I tried to get out as a fast as I could because maybe the teammate that's coming in could have more minutes and do his job."

On his performance:
"I didn't play very well. Any kind of player can have one bad night."

On making the playoffs:
"We already lost the opportunity, we still can make it. We've got four games, it's only one point.

RED BULLS MIDFIELDER DEMA KOVALENKO

On the team's performance:
"We didn't come out and play today. I don't know what the reason was. They were three heads above us and I don't know why. They did whatever they wanted today, that's what's so disappointing.

"We played at home; we have to dictate the play. We have to take it to them because it's our home field. Today it seemed like they played at home and we played away."

On the remainder of the season:
"We still have four games left, and now we're going to see what this team is made of. Every game is going to be a fight, we just have to come out and try to win games and put us in the playoffs. It's going to be very interesting to see how this team responds.

"We have to go back to work, see what mistakes we did and try to get some points in these next four games. I still believe in this team. We have a good enough group to make the playoffs.

"It's about fighting and who wants it more, we have to look at ourselves and say 'hey, we have to do better than that.'"

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION HEAD COACH STEVE NICOL

On the game:
"Great result, good performance. Some good goals, could have had more."

On missing midfielder Shalrie Joseph:
"I think clearly losing Shalrie [Joseph to a hand injury] is a blow to us. He's a big influence on the team but I think you saw tonight that we have a good squad and everyone has picked up the slack. The three guys in the middle of the park did a great job for us both going forward and defensively. I think we showed what we're all about tonight. We're not a one-man team."

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION FORWARD TAYLOR TWELLMAN

On the result:
"It was awesome. Obviously, coming into New York needing a win, we kind of got back to our old style of winning tackles and pressuring teams and it worked."

On his goal:
"I was just happy the whistle didn't blow afterwards, telling me I was offsides. It was nice. Obviously, [midfielder Steve] Ralston did a great job of getting on the end of the ball and I just hit it as hard as I could into the corner like I usually try to do."

On the rest of the season:
"I think the key is to go in on a roll into the playoffs. Obviously, other teams are kind of slowing down so if we could go in on a roll, the ball is in our court."

NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION MIDFIELDER JAMES RILEY

On playing in New York:
"It's tough. They have a lot of world-class players, the turf definitely plays to their advantage. [But,] adjusting to the turf and coming out collectively, not making mistakes early, getting into the groove, I think we did well."

On playing on the left side of the midfield:
"It's just good to get on the pitch against no matter what. I wish the guys well when I'm not on the field, I'm ready to go in as a sub and in as a starter. It was just a good collective effort and I was just glad I was able to contribute and help us get a win."
