Report: Montreal Impact to sign center back Karifa Yao to Homegrown deal

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

The Montreal Impact's academy has become a steady source of talent in recent years, and IMFC are set to sign another promising prospect to a Homegrown Player contract, according to a report from a local journalist.

Nicolas Martineau, an Impact beat reporter for TVA Sports, stated that the club are signing 18-year-old center back Karifa Yao as their next HGP, a move apparently confirmed by head coach Remi Garde at Friday's training session ahead of Saturday's home match vs. Orlando City (5 pm ET | TVAS, TSN3/5 in Canada, MLS LIVE on ESPN+ in US).

A Canadian youth international, Yao rose through the ranks at Laval youth club Etoiles de l’Est before joining the Impact's academy, and he has been invited to train with IMFC's first team on several occasions dating back to last year. He'll continue to play for the Under-19 academy side as they conclude their 2018-19 campaign but could be called up to the first team on short notice.
