Recap: FCD, Quakes spoil their chances in scoreless draw

FRISCO, Texas — FC Dallas and the visiting San Jose Earthquakes waged a toe-to-toe battle on Saturday night at FC Dallas Stadium, but neither team found the edge and had to settle for a scoreless draw.

The Earthquakes had the best chance of the night when, in the first half, MLS leading scorer Chris Wondolowski got a shot past FCD 'keeper Kevin Hartman only to be denied on the goal line by man-of-the-match Hernán Pertúz.

FCD also had a good look at goal in the first half when Fabián Castillo hit a loose ball towards the net only to find the body of San Jose defender Jason Hernandez, who saved his team from going down early.

For FC Dallas, the draw signified an undefeated three-game homestand, but it also meant the team stretched their winless streak to 13 games, tied for the fourth-longest in MLS history.

Though San Jose, will rue some wasted chances, they'll take solace in the fact that they notched their first clean sheet since a 1-0 win against Seattle on March 31.

In an effort to break FC Dallas' long winless streak, head coach Schellas Hyndman gave David Ferreira his first start in more than 14 months. And with the 2010 MLS MVP back in the driver's seat, FCD enjoyed some good moments in what was a cagey first half, as the Colombian playmaker sent hopeful balls up to lone striker Brek Shea.

But it was Castillo who nearly found the net in the 31st minute for FCD when he connected a loose ball after Quakes 'keeper Jon Busch failed to collect it. Hernandez, who fell on the play in front of the goal, was in the right spot to have the ball hit his body and bounce away from danger.

The Earthquakes answered right back. Looking to play through Gordon, the big forward's 36th-minute flick-on freed Wondolowski past Pertúz and in on goal. MLS' leading scorer was able to chip past an on-rushing Hartman, but Pertúz recovered to clear the ball off the line in a thrilling sequence.

Neither side was able to find much of a foothold in the second half, but the game sprung to life in the last 20 minutes. San Jose midfielder Ramiro Corrales was shown two yellow cards in the span of four minutes for challenges on FCD left back Carlos Rodríguez, and his ejection reduced the Earthquakes down to 10 men for the first time this season.

However, the motto for San Jose this season has been to never say die, and the red card seemed to spur them into action. Two wild sequences in the last 15 minutes saw the visiting squad nearly take the lead through Wondolowski, but some last-ditch defending by Matt Hedges and Hartman preserved the shutout.

These two sides will become quite familiar with each other over the next two weeks, meeting again in just 11 days time at Buck Shaw Stadium in San Jose.

Before that, however, the Earthquakes will host Real Salt Lake on July 14. FCD, meanwhile, will also be in action that Saturday when they pay a visit to Colorado.
