PRO referee Mark Geiger among those selected for final phase of World Cup

Mark Geiger - points during a World Cup match

US referee Mark Geiger is among the officials who made the final cut at the 2018 World Cup, putting him in contention to oversee the tournament final or third-place game this weekend.

FIFA’s Referees Committee selected 12 referees, 26 assistant referees and 10 Video Assistant Referees for the event’s “final phase,” and Geiger was one of two Concacaf-based officials on that list, along with Mexico's Cesar Arturo Ramos.

Refereeing assignments are released 48 hours before World Cup matches, so Geiger would likely learn of any weekend assignment on Thursday or Friday.

This is Geiger’s second World Cup; he made a similarly deep run at Brazil 2014. His most recent match was a contentious Round of 16 match between Colombia and England.
