Portland Timbers unveil their new logo

Portland Timbers new logo for when they begin play in MLS in 2011.

They are called the Timbers, so it’s only fitting they will have an ax on their new logo.

The Portland Timbers unveiled on Saturday—during a live event at halftime of the US-England World Cup match (WATCH)—the new logo and colors. They crest will grace their jerseys when the Timbers begin play in MLS in 2011.

“A lot of thought went into creating a dynamic logo that both signifies the enormity of our move to Major League Soccer while also paying homage to our rich and unique past,” said Merritt Paulson, president of the Timbers. “We believe we have found that balance and are thrilled to commemorate a new era of Timbers soccer with our official MLS logo.”

The new logo is based on the team’s original crest, with a circle “representing unity, wholeness and the pursuit of perfection,” according to a release put out by the club. A bold ax, shaped as a T, is the centerpiece.

The logo was conjured up by RARE Design.

“Today is not only a franchise landmark with the new logo unveiling, but also it is the official start of our MLS ticket campaign,” Paulson said.

On Monday, the Timbers will announce more ticketing information, including ticket prices and how fans can become season ticket holders for the inaugural MLS season in 2011.
