The New York Red Bulls announced Monday that they have loaned forward Carlos Rivas to Atletico Nacional in his native Colombia for the remainder of the 2018. Reports out of Colombia last week had previously linked Rivas with a move back to the Medellin-based side, one of the country's most successful.

Rivas, 24, arrived in New York from Orlando as part of a headline-grabbing deal in the offseason that saw star playmaker Sacha Kljestan traded to the Lions. He started three of the MLS five matches that he appeared in for the Red Bulls in 2018 and scored two goals. He also appeared four times in Concacaf Champions League play and once in the U.S. Open Cup.

"We believe sending Carlos out on loan is the best option for the player and the club," said Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett in a team statement. "The most important thing for Carlos and his continued development is to play consistently and we are glad to have found a good situation for him and his family."

The move frees up a senior roster spot for the Red Bulls, though Rivas has a US green card and thus did not occupy one of the team's international roster spots. According to the MLS Players' Association, Rivas is earning $444,996 in guaranteed compensation in 2018.
