New York City FC 2, Columbus Crew SC 0 | 2018 MLS Match Recap

New York City made it a perfect nine points in three home games in seven days against Eastern Conference opponents, defeating Columbus Crew SC, 2-0, Saturday night at Yankee Stadium.

NYCFC remains undefeated at home with 10 wins in 11 games without a loss, and momentarily moved into a tie with Atlanta United for the Eastern Conference lead and Supporters’ Shield race ahead of the Five Stripes match against Seattle Sounders FC Sunday (2 pm ET | FOX - Full TV & Streaming info).

Jonathan Lewis again came off the bench to make an impact, stealing a poor attempted clearance by Zack Steffen and ringing his first-time attempt off the post. The young, speedy attacking player recovered his own rebound and slid the ball to Jesus Medina, who settled before putting a left-footed attempt into the net.

Anton Tinnerholm added a 90th-minute insurance goal on a long run down the right flank before cutting inside of Wil Trapp and slipping behind Steffen, who came out to challenge.

Eduardo Sosa was sent off on a straight red card for a late challenge on Maxi Moralez just before the final whistle.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: There were tired legs, but NYCFC fought through with another stellar second half surge to win their third straight home win and fourth victory in five games, while Crew SC continue to struggle away from MAPFRE Stadium, losing their fourth away from home.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Steffen was so solid with his distribution, but his one gaffe proved costly when Lewis intercepted his poor clearance for the only goal NYCFC would need.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: For a third straight game, Lewis was the spark off the bench needed, proving he’s someone who is earning more and more playing time on a deep attacking side.
