Hamilton Tournament set to kick off

Doug Hamilton coached at Greensboro College and led the team to a national runner-up finish and a number two national ranking.

Perhaps it's fate that The Pride returned to the second in the national on the eve of the inaugural Doug Hamilton Memorial Soccer Tournament. The event is Sept. 8 and 9 at Macpherson Stadium at Bryan Park.

Hamilton led GC to 59-22-4 mark from 1987-90. His 1989 team won the conference championship and was the first ever Greensboro College soccer team to advance to the NCAA playoffs. That team also finished as the national runner-up. He and the '89 team were inducted into the GC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000.

After leaving Greensboro College, Hamilton had a very successful business career with addidas, and then in professional soccer. A two-time Major League Soccer executive of the Year with the L.A. Galaxy, he died of a heart attack in March, 2006. He was inducted posthumously to the Greensboro College Athletics Hall of Fame in April, 2006.

Hamilton touched the lives of many Greensboro College student athletes. The Doug Hamilton Tournament helps remember all he did for GC-and the game of soccer. Additionally, a portion of proceeds from ticket sales for the tournament will be directed to the Aedan Hamilton Fund, which was established by Friends of Doug Hamilton.

Participating teams are host Greensboro College (3-0/#2 in current NSCAA NCAA Division III poll); Lasell College of Mass. (1-1); Methodist University (2-0) and Oglethrorpe University (1-0).

Tickets for the tournament are as follows: $5 for general admission; $3 for students/seniors; $1 for any youth soccer player dressed in uniform. As per College policy, students, faculty and staff of Greensboro College are admitted free with their Pride Card.
