D.C. United to welcome Rangers to RFK

D.C. United booked another summer visit from a major European club, announcing Wednesday that Scottish power Rangers will be making a visit to RFK Stadium on July 24.

Rangers are easily the most successful team in Scotland’s history. Recently crowned Scottish Premier League champions for a 53rd time, the Glasgow-based club also has 33 Scottish Cups and 26 Scottish League Cups to its name, as well as runners-up medals from the 2008 UEFA Cup.

“Glasgow Rangers are one of the world’s most storied clubs and it’s an honor for D.C. United to compete against them,” said D.C. United president and CEO Kevin Payne in a statement. “Rangers fans are famous for their loyalty and passion, and we look forward to welcoming them to RFK Stadium this summer.”

Walter Smith’s squad counts U.S. internationals DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu among its ranks, although Beasley will be out of a contract by season end and his future with the club remains uncertain. Former U.S. captain Claudio Reyna also spent a memorable two seasons at Ibrox.

The match is D.C.’s second announced friendly against a big European club this summer. AC Milan will also visit RFK on May 26.

Rangers are also in talks to play Old Firm archrival Celtic at Boston’s Fenway Park on July 21. Celtic will take on Seattle Sounders FC at Qwest Field on July 18.
