Copa del Rey semi-finals continue

Under the radar Valencia (R) hope to slide past La Liga super power Barcelona (L) in the Copa del Rey semi-final.

MADRID - Barcelona's hopes of winning a trophy treble this season have received two major boosts in the last week, and now Frank Rijkaard's side will be hoping for another as the Copa del Rey takes centre stage.

Last Wednesday's 3-2 away win over Celtic has given Barca a great chance of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals, while Sunday's 5-1 league thrashing of Levante means they are now only two points behind leaders Real Madrid in the Primera Liga.

Next in line for the in-form Catalan side are Valencia, who Barca host on Wednesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.

"We are playing for three different titles in eight or 10 days. There are three months of competition remaining and every game is a final," said Barca full-back Sylvinho on Monday.

"We need to take a different approach with the cup and the Champions League."

Barca are now unbeaten in their last 14 competitive matches, but Valencia have also shown signs of improvement recently after a torrid few months on and off the pitch.

Ronald Koeman's men have gone four games without defeat and although they could only draw at home to Recreativo Huelva on Sunday, the Dutch coach is feeling good about his side.

"From the first minute we played very well, we controlled the game and we created a lot of clear chances, but we didn't have the luck," Koeman said of the Recre game.

"It was our best game at home and the applause from the fans proved that."

In this week's other Copa del Rey semi-final, confidence will also be sky high in the Getafe camp as they prepare to host Racing Santander on Thursday.

On Sunday Getafe became the first team in over a year to beat local rivals Real Madrid in a league game at the Bernabeu, while last week Michael Laudrup's troops completed a 4-1 aggregate win over AEK Athens to move into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

Getafe, playing in their first season of European football, are the only Spanish team still standing in the UEFA Cup following the exits of Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Real Zaragoza, and they will look to build on that by attempting to reach the Copa del Rey final for the second successive season.

The Madrid-based side lost 1-0 to Sevilla in last year's final.

However, Racing will also be brimming with belief heading into their trip to the capital for what will be the first Copa del Rey semi-final in their history.

Marcelino Garcia Toral's men are just three points off the Champions League places in La Liga following Sunday's 1-0 win over in-form Almeria.

"For our trip to Getafe it was much better to win, as the mood after a victory is much better," said Marcelino.

"We have confirmed that we are once more on the right path. It's clear we are able to fight for the top places, providing we don't have more injury problems.

"Since January we have been affected by injuries in almost every position."
