Columbus Crew SC on Thursday afternoon announced that they have waived second-year forward JJ Williams.

Williams made seven appearances in his rookie season with the Crew (three starts), while also spending time on loan in the USL Championship with Birmingham Legion FC.

“As we assessed our roster throughout this preseason, given our depth at the forward position, we believed it would be difficult for JJ to find important and regular first-team minutes at the MLS level, which are critical for his development,” said Crew SC president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a team statement. “We want to thank JJ for his contributions to the club during the 2019 season and wish him well.”

Columbus will wrap up their participation in the Visit Tucson Sun Cup in Arizona on Feb. 22 and then turn their attention to the regular-season opener against New York City FC on March 1.
