Columbus Crew SC reward Designated Player Federico Higuain with largest contract in club history

Federico Higuain looks to make a pass

Federico Higuain is showing no signs of slowing down despite his aging legs, and Columbus Crew SC have rewarded the 30-year-old handsomely for it.

Crew SC announced on Monday morning that they have signed Higuain to a new DP deal that is the most lucrative contract in the club's history. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Federico has proven to be one of the top talents in Major League Soccer and a key contributor to the attacking, possession-based brand of soccer that we are trying to play at the club,” sporting director and head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement. “This new contract demonstrates both [owner Anthony Precourt’s] vision to create an attractive, winning team and Federico’s commitment to play in Columbus for the foreseeable future.”

Higuain has been one of the top playmakers in MLS since signing with Columbus in 2012. He has amassed 27 goals and 23 assists in his two-and-a-half seasons, and led the club to postseason berth in 2014.

Last year, the Argentine finished the regular season with 11 goals and seven assists in 29 appearances.
