Pat Onstad - Columbus Crew SC

Columbus Crew SC have named Pat Onstad new technical director, the club announced Monday. Onstad was an assistant coach under Gregg Berhalter and had been acting interim general manager after Berhalter left for the US men's national team.

Onstad is a two-time winner of MLS Goalkeeper of the Year (2003, 2005) and is the league's all-time leader in goals against average among keepers who have played at least 15,000 minutes with 1.12. He's also a three-time MLS Cup champion.

“I want to congratulate Pat Onstad on his new role as Technical Director of Crew SC as he has been a valuable member of this organization and someone who has been extremely successful throughout his career,” Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko said in a media release. “Pat’s role with the Crew is an important one as we look to continue to build a competitive roster and his experience in this League, his eye for talent and his shared passion for the vision of the new era of Crew SC made him the right person for the role.”

Prior to joining Berhalter's staff in Columbus, Onstad was Chief Scout and Manager of Football Partnerships for Toronto FC from 2013-2014. Bezbatchenko was named TFC in 2013 before joining the Crew as president this offseason.

The Crew also announced hires to Caleb Porter's staff as Mike Matkovic, Matt Reis and Pablo Moreira join as assistant coaches.

Matkovic, a former assistant coach with the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA and Toronto FC, most recently was Director of Operations and Coaching for the Chicago Fire Juniors Soccer Club from 2011-2018.

Reis was most recently a goalkeeper coach for the US men's national team, and is a 16-year MLS veteran and MLS Cup champion.

Moreira worked under Porter at the University of Akron as well as the Portland Timbers and also played two seasons at Akron under Porter.
