Chivas try to run past Red Bulls

Maykel Galindo

and Wolyniec scored on that day, a 3-2 win. It was also New York's first win against their Eastern Conference rivals since Oct. 8, 2005 at RFK Stadium.
• Red Bulls manager Bruce Arena made three changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the New England Revolution at home the weekend before. Carlos Mendes returned to the lineup, coming into central defense as Seth Stammler moved into the midfield and Joe Vide returned to the substitutes' bench. Jon Conway came in for Ronald Waterreus between the posts, while Jozy Altidore, in his first game back from the U-20 World Cup, replaced the suspended Juan Pablo Angel in attack.
• Here's Arena's team (4-4-2): Jon Conway - Hunter Freeman, Jeff Parke (Joe Vide 46), Carlos Mendes, Kevin Goldthwaite - Dane Richards, Claudio Reyna (Dema Kovalenko 73), Seth Stammler, Clint Mathis (Dave van den Bergh 85) - Jozy Altidore, John Wolyniec. Substitutes Not Used: Danny Cepero, Jerrod Laventure, Chris Leitch, Markus Schopp
• "Defensively for the most part it was a very good effort. We had a couple of lapses, one in the first half, one in the second, that could have been converted into a goal for D.C. United," Arena said. "But I think the guys did well for the most part.

TEAM NEWS
• In the five games since Juan Pablo Angel rounded out his six-game goal-scoring streak, the Red Bulls have scored two goals. Both of them have come from John Wolyniec, who has now started four games in a row.
• "Wolyniec worked real hard on a day where, let's face it, it was a scrap. He's a hard worker, what more can you say," Arena said. "I think in his experience, he's gotten a little bit better because of it. Even on a bad day, John helps our team."
• Arena asked Jozy Altidore if he would like a few days off after scoring four goals in five games for the USA in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which saw its dreams ended in a quarterfinal loss to Austria. But without Angel in the lineup, Altidore refused the offer.
• "I think when we did get it forward, I thought Altidore in particular was a handful in being able to hold the ball up a little bit and be dangerous," Arena said. "But the goal that those two put together was a very good goal."
• It was also an important win coming without Angel, who while he hasn't scored in four games, was still out of the lineup for the first time since making his MLS debut on May 13.
• "One player doesn't make a team and that's the case throughout the league," Arena said. "It's nice that we've kind of got the ship steered in the right direction over the last three games. We've corrected our defensive woes. It's something to build on."
• Jon Conway was also called upon to deputize for Ronald Waterreus after the former Dutch international missed his second consecutive game with left ankle swelling. Conway again stepped up and made four saves for his third clean sheet of the year.
• "I think we're getting there," Conway said. "Guys have been making great tackles and our positioning has been better. We're just getting more comfortable with each other and now we're getting that solidarity back as a group."
• "I thought Conway again was pretty good," Arena said. "He's done very well. He brings a great attitude to the team every day. When he's called upon, he comes through."
• "Hunter's still trying to get his feet on the ground a little bit. He's really had a tough time over the last month in getting back from an injury. We really forced him back way too early and if the conditions were perfect we probably would have been bringing him back this week. Hunter knows he's still got to get his fitness back."

CHIVAS USA
In their last league match nearly two weeks ago, Chivas USA maintained their winning form at home, defeating the Columbus Crew 2-1 at The Home Depot Center on July 14. Chivas USA remain in third place in the Western Conference with 24 points from 15 matches, six behind FC Dallas for second place but six ahead of the fourth-place Colorado Rapids.

LAST MATCH
• Chivas USA were returning home after back-to-back road games -- in their final home game for more than a month. The Crew hadn't lost in more than a month as they moved into the thick of the Eastern Conference race.
• Chivas took the lead after just 19 minutes. Jesse Marsch won the ball outside the area and found Maykel Galindo. He rounded a Crew defender in the area and drove a low ball into the goalmouth that skipped past a second defender for Ante Razov to tap in.
• But the Crew leveled matters just four minutes later. Guillermo Barros Schelotto served a corner from the right and Stefani Miglioranzi got up to smash a header that hit the underside of the bar and came nearly straight down, but still over the line.
• Chivas scored the winner in the 69th minute through some good fortune. Francisco Mendoza received a corner outside the penalty area and sent a half-shot, half-cross toward the far post that took a deflection off Eddie Gaven past goalkeeper Will Hesmer.
• Chivas USA head coach Preki made four changes to the team that played to a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution the weekend before. All three campaigners in the Copa America were back - goalkeeper Brad Guzan, midfielder Sacha Kljestan and the versatile Jonathan Bornstein. They came into the team along with Lawson Vaughn, as Preston Burpo, Jason Hernandez, suspended Alex Zotinca and the injured Paulo Nagamura were all out of the first XI.
• Here's Preki's team (4-4-2): Brad Guzan - Lawson Vaughn, Claudio Suarez, Shavar Thomas, Orlando Perez (Laurent Merlin 60) - Sacha Kljestan, Jesse Marsch, Jonathan Bornstein, Francisco Mendoza - Maykel Galindo, Ante Razov. Substitutes Not Used: Preston Burpo, John Cunliffe, Anthony Hamilton, Jason Hernandez, Rodrigo Lopez, Erasmo Solorzano

TEAM NEWS
• In the three games without all three national team campaigners, Chivas did take four of a possible nine points. "We knew when they were away that we were a bit weaker, but the guys that replaced them did a very good job," Preki said. "Obviously, by them coming back tonight to the lineup they gave us a boost and hopefully we get to see them a little bit more often now."
• With Nagamura and Zotinca unavailable, Preki put Kljestan in at his usual spot wide on the right of midfield, but moved Jonathan Bornstein into a central midfield role alongside Jesse Marsch. Bornstein has mainly figured as a wide player - mostly as fullback, but also in midfield - while also playing up top a couple of times.
• "Certainly Paulo and Jesse (Marsch) will stay there defensively a bit more," Razov said. "It hurts us a bit - not taking anything away from them as players because they are key players for us - but tonight we had more movement. You put Jonny in there and he's kind of buzzing around. You have Sacha sometimes making runs in and out ... guys running through, there was a little more fluid movement in there."
• The victory kept Chivas undefeated at home on the league campaign, with six victories and one draw in their seven games at The Home Depot Center as the home team. That does not include a loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy at Carson where they were the visitors. Chivas is the only team still to not lose at home this year.
• "Over the last two years, there's something about playing for these fans and something about playing for this club that everybody takes pride in," Chivas midfielder Jesse Marsch said. "Whether it's here and in Chicago, where we have a lot of our fans come out, you feel a responsibility to try and show that you have a lot of pride in the colors and you have a lot of pride in this team. I think there is an underlying feeling within the whole group about that."
• However, Chivas is 1-5-2 on the road - with their next four matches as the visitors. There are trips to New York, Kansas City and Toronto, with another game as the road team against the Galaxy, before their next home match Aug. 26 vs. Colorado.
• "We've all been talking about how we need to have a good mentality," Chivas USA defender Claudio Suarez. "We can't be too inconsistent. We want to be a team of importance and we need to play on the road like we do here at home."
• Since their last league game, Chivas USA became the fifth MLS team to be dumped out of the U.S. Open Cup, losing 3-1 to Seattle Sounders at Qwest Field. Laurent Merlin staked Chivas to a 16th-minute lead, but two goals from Seba Le Toux and one from Roger Levesque sealed Chivas' fate.
• Here's Preki's team: Preston Burpo; Lawson Vaughn, Claudio Suárez, Jason Hernández, Orlando Pérez (John Cunliffe 59), Alex Zotinca (Rodrigo López 68), Jesse Marsch, Sacha Kljestan, Francisco Mendoza, Laurent Merlin, Maykel Galindo (Anthony Hamilton 83)
