Behind the Badge: Whoa, Nelly!

Last Friday, pop/rock star Nelly Furtado performed at the Patriot Center on the campus of George Mason University. The Canadian-born Furtado's set was taken in by three United players - Bobby Boswell, Brian Carroll and Josh Gros (and a few friends). Why might United players attend such a show? Because Furtado had a surprise in store for the concert-goers, as during her song "Forca" (Portuguese for "strength") she came out wearing a D.C. United jersey with "Furtado 07" on the back. Her four dancers were also sporting personalized kits. Forca was the official song of the 2004 Europeon Championships, which were held in Portugal.

Trialists
Two players will join United on trial beginning Wednesday - defender Kim Jaggy and forward Mira Mupier. The 24-year old Jaggy most recently played with Grasshopper-Club Zürich in Switzerland - his native country. A forward, Mupier played his college ball at UNC-Charlotte where he scored 28 goals from 2001-2004. He was a two-time All-Conference USA selection and was on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds roster during 2005 and 2006.

In the meantime, United training sessions of late have been frequented by former United midfielder Domenic Mediate. Mediate is returning to form following a broken leg that prematurely ended his 2006 MLS season.

Man of the Match
Beginning Wednesday, two new Man of the Match jerseys will be available for auction via MLSgear.com. Following his impressive performance in United's 0-0 draw with the Galaxy on June 2, Fred earned Man of the Match honors, while Ben Olsen easily got the nod for his first career hat trick in D.C.'s 4-2 dismantling of the New York Red Bulls. Both game worn jerseys have been autographed by the individual and will be available for your bids.
