Atlanta United's Miguel Almiron named Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

Miguel Almiron - Atlanta United - Player of the Week

Atlanta United haven’t lost in their last seven matches, and Miguel Almiron is a big reason why.

After his latest standout performance, Almiron was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 9.

In front of over 45,000 fans at Mercedez-Benz Stadium on Saturday, Almiron scored twice to lift Atlanta to a 4-1 winover the Montreal Impact. The 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year scored his first goal on a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 in the 70th minute and added his second in the 84th minute after a dazzling run down the middle of the field.

The Paraguayan midfielder nearly completed the hat trick but a late shot ricocheted off the post. As it was, the brace was his second of the season and the fifth of his MLS career. Over eight starts this season, the 24-year-old is tied for the Golden Boot lead with teammate Josef Martinez with six goals and tied for fourth in the league with four assists.

Atlanta — who sit in second in the Eastern Conference with 19 points and are first in the MLS Power Rankings — return to action Saturday to face the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park (8:30 p.m. ET | TSN1/3/4/5 — Full TV & streaming info).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men's soccer in the United States and Canada.
