AMSTERDAM – The agent for Freddy Adu says he is in discussions with a pair of Swedish Allsvenskan clubs over the out-of-work attacker.
The 25-year-old former US international has been a free agent since his contract with FK Jagodina expired in December. Adu, who has 17 USMNT caps to his credit, left the Serbian top flight club with just one cup appearance off the bench.
"I am speaking to a couple of clubs I would rather not disclose, out of respect to the teams," Adu rep Denis Celebic told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday.
Interest in the American out of the Swedish top flight dates back to October. More recently, various Swedish outlets reported this weekend that Adu had been offered to GIF Sundsvall.
He was then linked with Helsingborg – who are managed by former Celtic and Barcelona superstar Henrik Larsson – after his agent was spotted at their stadium on Monday. However, Celebic told FotballTransfers.com on Tuesday that he was at the Olympia regarding another client and that Adu was not set to sign with the Reds.
Since leaving Major League Soccer to join Portuguese giants Benfica in 2007, Adu has played in Brazil, France, Greece and Turkey, as well as having a second stint back home. An MLS Cup champion in 2004, he has notched 22 goals and 23 assists in 146 matches across all competitions for D.C. United, Real Salt Lake and the Philadelphia Union.
