GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Leones Negros playmaker Jesús Vázquez has never been called into a US camp at any level, but the 20-year-old did his future chances no harm on Wednesday evening, when he scored and impressed in his side’s 2-0 win over Necaxa in the Copa MX.

A Los Angeles native, Vázquez was the attacking fulcrum for Leones Negros, giving Necaxa problems all night. Vázquez saw a shot tipped over by goalkeeper Federico Cristóforo in the 70th minute before finally hitting the back of the net with the clinching goal in the 93rd minute, when he drove a low shot into the corner of the net from just inside the penalty area.

The win for Leones Negros puts them into third place in Group 3 on four points.

The leader of the group is Club Tijuana, who moved to 10 points after they came from behind to beat Tepic 3-2 in Estadio Caliente on Wednesday night.

Four Americans featured for Xolos, with Joe Corona captaining the side for 58 minutes before making way for Paul Arriola to make his first appearance this season for the first team. In midfield, Alejandro Guido went the full 90 minutes, while US U-20 international left back John Requejo Jr. came off the bench with 25 minutes left.

In Group 6, Gabriel Farfan played 75 minutes in a defensive role for Chiapas in their 2-0 home loss to second division side Zacatepec. The loss leaves Chiapas with three points from three games and in last place in the group.

Finally, in Group 4, 20-year-old Tijuana loanee Stevie Rodriguez completed 90 minutes in Dorados de Sinaloa’s 0-0 tie at Irapuato. Dorados lead the group on six points.
