Report: Three MLS clubs interested in ex-Arsenal left back Kieran Gibbs

Kieran Gibbs - Arsenal - tight shot

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

English left back Kieran Gibbs is drawing interest from three MLS sides – D.C. United, Inter Miami CF and the New York Red Bulls – before his West Bromwich Albion contract expires this summer, according to a report from ESPN FC senior writer James Olley.

Olley’s report outlines that Inter Miami are the frontrunner, with Gibbs free to negotiate with outside clubs and The Baggies unlikely to renew his contract. The 31-year-old has logged 100 total appearances for West Brom, who are 13 points from safety in the Premier League table and in danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

Aside from reaching the century mark at West Brom, Gibbs enjoyed a distinguished Arsenal career after coming through the club’s academy. He made 229 appearances for Arsenal, plus had a seven-game stint with Norwich City. He’s shown an eagerness to get forward, contributing 34 goals and 29 assists across 337 professional appearances.

With Inter Miami reportedly in the lead for Gibbs’ signature, he’d provide a veteran presence as new head coach Phil Neville takes over. They acquired left back Patrick Seagrist via a trade with RBNY earlier this offseason, though could use additional options.

D.C. United also have a new head coach in Hernan Losada, with depth likely needed at the fullback position. Meanwhile, RBNY are entering their first full season under head coach Gerhard Struber and have several options at outside back.

Should Gibbs come to MLS, he’d arrive with 10 appearances for England’s national team. While at Arsenal, he won two FA Cups and two Community Shields.
