TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing
Atlanta United have acquired midfielder Santiago Sosa from River Plate, the club announced Friday.
Sosa, 21, is a product of River Plate's famed academy and has been capped often at the Argentine youth national level, including four appearances at the 2019 U-20 World Cup. The deep-lying midfielder has made 21 appearances in his professional club career.
“Santiago is a holding midfielder who understands and reads the game exceptionally well for someone his age,” Atlanta VP & Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said in a club statement. “He broke through into the First Team at River last year, experiencing numerous big matches in both Copa Libertadores and the Copa Diego Maradona, in addition to his time with Argentina U-20s.”
Sosa is the latest high-profile talent to join Atlanta from Argentina, following the likes of Miguel Almiron, Ezequiel Barco and Pity Martinez. He is expected to slot in defensive midfield under head coach Gabriel Heinze, who would be familiar with the young talent given his experience managing in the Argentine league.
The midfielder is Atlanta's second addition from Argentina this winter, following veteran forward Lisandro Lopez, most recently of Racing Club.
