New Atlanta United coach Gabriel Heinze arrives in town for the first time

Gabriel Heinze has arrived — literally.

A little more than a month after being named the third full-time head coach in Atlanta United FC history, the Argentine has landed in town.

The club tweeted a picture of Heinze at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, bags in tow.

Once Heinze settles into his office and places family pictures on his desk, there’s plenty of work to do. He inherits a club that missed out on the playoffs in 2020 after consecutive trophy-winning seasons. Heinze will look to quickly mesh Designated Players Josef Martinez, on the mend from ACL surgery, Ezequiel Barco and Marcelino Moreno for the first time.

And there’s no shortage of players Heinze, who arrives after three years in charge of Velez Sarsfield, is reportedly looking to land, from Venezuelan right back Ronald Hernandez to veteran Argentine forward Lisandro Lopez and young Argentine midfielder Franco Ibarra.

Heinze also has his technical staff in order, the club announced earlier this month.
