TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

The Montreal Impact have acquired forward Sunusi Ibrahim from Nigerian side 36 Lion FC, the club announced Tuesday. Ibrahim is under contract through 2023 with a club option for 2024.

Ibrahim, 18, led the Nigerian league in scoring in 2019 while playing with Nasarawa United. He had 10 goals in 22 games. He has featured for the Nigerian national team at various youth levels, including most recently with the U-23s.

"The club is very happy to have completed the transfer of this young player, who is already part of his country’s U23 squad despite his young age," sporting director Olivier Renard said in a club statement. “It’s a great addition to the squad, especially considering several European clubs were very interested in him as well."

Ibrahim is a center forward who can also play on the wings. Renard called him a fast and powerful striker.

Prior to acquiring Ibrahim, the Impact traded for American international attacker Djordje Mihailovic as well as Canadian international defender Kamal Miller. Montreal made the playoffs in 2020 though fell to the New England Revolution in the Play-In Round.
