Center back Larrys Mabiala has signed a multi-year contract extension with the Portland Timbers, the club announced Tuesday.

Mabiala, 33, has been with Portland since the 2017season and has eight goals and two assists in 83 regular-season appearances (81 starts). He helped Portland win the MLS is Back Tournament in August 2020, scoring in the final and earning MLS is Back Tournament Best XI presented by BODYARMOR honors.

“Larrys is a leader in the locker room who provides valuable experience and knowledge of the league,” Gavin Wilkinson, Portland’s general manager and president of soccer, said in a release. “We are thrilled that Larrys and his family will continue to call Portland home.”

Mabiala joined Portland from Kayserispor in the Turkish first division. He’s also played in his native France for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain, developing as a youth player at the latter club. On the international scene, Mabiala has made nine appearances (all starts) for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“I am very happy to renew my contract here with the Portland Timbers and it wouldn’t be possible without my family,” Mabiala said in a release. “I’m so blessed to extend my journey with such an incredible organization from top to bottom, which includes the front office and the coaching staff, and getting to work every day with my teammates. I’m focused on putting in the work to bring another trophy to the Rose City."

Other center backs on Portland’s roster include Bill Tuiloma and Dario Zuparic. They traded Julio Cascante to expansion side Austin FC earlier this offseason, and have college soccer product Zac McGraw as another option.
