Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson weighs in on MLS superclub debate

Merritt Paulson has never been one to shy away from sharing his opinions, and the Portland Timbers owner was in top form on Friday, going back and forth with FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas on Twitter regarding his list of "superclubs" in MLS.

It started with Lalas' original tweet, which included the MLS teams that he believes have earned the superclub moniker: The LA Galaxy, LAFC, the Seattle Sounders, Atlanta United and Toronto FC.

You'll notice, of course, that Lalas' list didn't include the Timbers. And that's where Paulson came in to defend his club's credentials and question exactly what criteria Lalas was using to formulate his opinion, with the analyst responding again shortly thereafter.

Wherever you fall on the superclub debate, we're always here for Merritt offering his two cents and spicing up the Twitter timeline. His team has some silverware, too, winning MLS Cup in 2015 and lifting the MLS is Back Tournament trophy this past season.

Does Paulson have a point? Should the Timbers have been included among Lalas' list of MLS superclubs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
