Alexander Buttner - New England Revolution - tight shot

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report

Perhaps the writing was on the wall when the New England Revolution signed left back Christian Mafla from Colombian side AtlƩtico Nacional on Monday, but now word emerges Alexander Buttner, who held that starting spot for much of the 2020 season, is on his way back to Europe.

The 31-year-old Dutch defender, who was signed by the Revs using Targeted Allocation Money on Nov. 1, 2019, reportedly is set to join Cypriot side APOEL FC.

Buttner started 15 of the 17 matches he appeared in during his first season with New England. DeJuan Jones, though, started all four of the Revs matches in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup playoffs with Buttner not making the game-day squad once in the postseason.

Coached by former Ireland national team manager Mick McCarthy, APOEL is the most popular, and successful, club in the Cypriot First Division with 28 league titles in their trophy case. As such, Thrylos also compete in the UEFA Europa League, where they fell to Czech Republic side Slovan Liberec during the qualifying stage this year.
