Former US men’s national team and LA Galaxy legend Cobi Jones has announced his candidacy for US Soccer Vice President in a message on social media.

Jones is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and co-owner of NWSL expansion side Angel City FC, set to play in 2022.

“Like many of us, I have experienced racial inequality and seen the gender inequality that plagues our society and game,” Jones said in Twitter post Monday. “I’m ready to contribute, to make a difference, and ensure that U.S. Soccer reflects the diversity of our families, friends and teammates. As the vice president, I want to ensure more opportunities are available to the next generation. In 2020, U.S. Soccer made history with the appointment of president Cindy Parlow Cone; it is time to make history again.

“Representation and access will inform all that I do. Increasing representation and access at every level of U.S. Soccer will grow our game in all its forms and allow the diversity of thought necessary to make U.S. Soccer better for us all.”

Jones made a record 164 international appearances for the USMNT from 1994-2000, playing in three World Cups and scoring 15 goals.

After brief stints with Coventry City and Vasco de Gama early in his professional career, Jones was an original member of the Galaxy, where he scored 70 goals in a little more than 300 appearances.

The 2021 U.S. Soccer Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections will be conducted during the National Council Meeting on Feb. 27, 2021 at U.S. Soccer's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Chicago. Deadline for candidates interested in running for U.S. Soccer President or Vice President is Dec. 29.
