New York Red Bulls midfielder Kaku has been linked with a January 2021 move to an unnamed Mexican club, according to a report from Argentine outlet TyC Sports.

RBNY exercised Kaku’s 2021 contract option upon announcing their year-end roster moves in November, suggesting that the 25-year-old remains part of their plans before head coach Gerhard Struber’s first year in charge.

Kaku, whose full name is Alejandro Romero Gamarra, is no stranger to transfer speculation during his Red Bulls tenure. The 2018-19 offseason included widespread reports about a move to Liga MX powerhouse side Club America, but a move never came together reportedly due to differences in asking price.

Kaku was originally signed by RBNY as a Young Designated Player ahead of the 2018 season, with the attacking midfielder joining from Argentine side Huracan. He’s since provided 13 goals and 25 assists in 72 games (63 starts) as the playmaker has shifted in and out of the lineup.

Kaku has also carved out an international career with Paraguay, contributing three goals in six appearances. He represented Argentina’s U-20 national team at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, then filed a one-time switch in association.
