Report: Gabriel Heinze will be Atlanta United's new head coach

Gabriel Heinze - Marseille - playing days

Atlanta United's search for a head coach is reportedly over, with a report out of Mexico saying Gabriel Heinze will lead the team in 2021.

Mexican publication AM reported on Friday that the former Argentina international will succeed Frank de Boer as the team's new head coach, with Heinze set to sign a two-year contract with the 2018 MLS Cup champions in the coming days. This would mark his first coaching job outside of his native Argentina.

Heinze began his coaching career in 2015 with Godoy Cruz before moving to Argentinos Juniors in 2016 and earning them promotion to Argentina's top flight in his only season with the club. He then coached Velez from 2017 but left the club in March of this year.

Heinze was an accomplished defender during his playing days, winning league titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Marseille and Olympic gold with Argentina before retiring in 2014.
