The best, and worst Major League Soccer teams, in transition during 2020 season

Philadelphia Union goal celebration at Columbus

The Philadelphia Union proved over the course of a unique 23-game regular season to be the best team in Major League Soccer. In Andre Blake, they had arguably the league’s best goalkeeper, an MLS Defender of the Year candidate in Mark McKenzie and perhaps the best Young Player in Brenden Aaronson.

A true sum-of-their-parts type team, the Union thrived in transition moments en route to winning a first Supporters’ Shield title. From the Red Bull school, the Union quickly went from defense to offense and then finished their chances on quick counters. Of Philadelphia’s 37 goals after the MLS is Back Tournament, 16 were scored in transition, more than any other team in the league.
