Report: San Jose Earthquakes' Matias Almeyda top target for Brazilian club Palmeiras

Matias Almeyda - San Jose Earthquakes - shouts on the sideline

Not for the first time since arriving in San Jose, Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda is reportedly the target of another club.

According to Argentinian journalist CĆ©sar Luis Merlo, Brazilian side Palmeiras has made Almeyda their top target for the club's coaching vacancy. Merlo reports that there has been no formal offer yet, and that should Almeyda be interested, any potential exit from the Quakes would need to be negotiated.

Almeyda took over the Quakes ahead of the 2019 season, inheriting a team that had just finished bottom in MLS. His two years have been up and down, with some scintillating runs of form as well as a number of heavy losses. The club fell just short of making the playoffs in 2019 thanks to a season-ending six-game losing streak while they endured an eight-game winless run this year that included games in which they conceded seven, six and five goals.

The charismatic Argentinian has built a track record of success at River Plate, Banfield and Chivas ā€“ the latter of which featured runs to the Liga MX 2017 Clausura championship, two Copa MX titles and this year's Concacaf Champions League trophy, which featured victories over MLS sides Seattle Sounders, New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC.

Palmeiras currently sit seventh in Brazil's top flight after 17 matches played. Almeyda was heavily linked with Liga MX giants CF Monterrey last winter.
