Vela opted out of the MLS is Back Tournament this past July while his wife was pregnant with their second child, citing family reasons.
Vela, 31, has been rehabbing from a Grade 2 MCL sprain that he suffered in an Aug. 22 game against the LA Galaxy. The Mexican forward, who’s also a Designated Player, has been training and working his way back to full fitness.
A season ago, Vela was named the Landon Donovan MLS MVP after posting 34 goals and 15 assists for the 2019 Supporters’ Shield winners. This year's injury and long layoff leave Vela with only three regular-season appearances and two goals to date.
Now with a baby girl at home, Vela will look to continue to his recovery and join LAFC for a push into the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs.
