Weston McKennie tests positive for COVID-19, Juventus enter voluntary isolation

Weston McKennie - September 20, 2020

US men’s national team and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie has tested positive for COVID-19, the club announced Wednesday.

Juventus are in voluntary isolation, where those who have tested negative will conduct regular training and match activities. Contact outside the group will be prohibited, though.

McKennie, 22, is on loan at Juventus from Bundesliga side FC Schlake 04. He’s started their two Serie A games this season, going 90 minutes in a victory over Sampdoria and being subbed off after 58 minutes in a draw against AS Roma.

To date, McKennie is the highest-profile American player to test positive for COVID-19. He has six goals in 19 USMNT camps, and would ideally play a significant role in the reported Europe-based November camp with friendlies against Australia and Wales.

As McKennie recovers, Juventus close out October with two more Serie A games. They also have UEFA Champions League group-stage games against Dynamo Kyiv and FC Barcelona.
