Report: Former Atlanta United coach Frank de Boer hired as new Netherlands national team coach

Frank de Boer – Atlanta United – before game1

Just shy of two months since he mutually agreed to part ways with Atlanta United, Frank De Boer has a new gig as the Netherlands' national team coach, it was announced Wednesday.

Valentijn Driessen of Dutch outlet De Telegraaf was the first to report De Boer was hired as the next national team coach, relaying that he has reached an agreement with the Dutch for a contract that would run until mid-2022. The intention is that De Boer will lead the team at the UEFA European Championship next summer, according to the report.

De Boer will reportedly announce his first selection for the international matches against Mexico (a friendly) and Nations League matches with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy the next week in the coming days.

De Boer is coming off a tumultuous run with Atlanta that saw him lead the Five Stripes to an Eastern Conference Championship appearance in 2019, when they lost to Toronto FC, but struggle out of the gate this season following a season-ending injury to star forward Josef Martinez before an anemic display at the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando that led to his departure.

He ended his tenure in MLS with 31W-19L-5D in 55 games.
