Goalkeeper depth has arrived for the LA Galaxy via free-agent signing Jonathan Klinsmann.

Klinsmann, 23, turned pro in 2017 for Bundesliga club Hertha BSC, though never debuted for their senior side. He then moved to Swiss Super League club St. Gallen for the 2019 campaign, but similarly was on the outside looking in. He's featured extensively for US youth national teams, most notably at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

“Jonathan is a young goalkeeper with valuable experience playing in Germany and Switzerland while representing his country on various levels,” head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto said in a release. “We think he can continue to progress as a member of the LA Galaxy. We look forward to strengthening our goalkeeper position with another talented player.”

Klinsmann is the son of former US men’s national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann. Germany-born, he was raised in Southern California and played for the University of California, Berkeley in 2016 before heading overseas. He also had youth stops at Pateadores FC and at Irvine Strikers FC.

Klinsmann was called into USMNT senior camp in 2018, though awaits his first cap. He’s registered a combined 32 appearances at the U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels.

As for how Klinsmann could slot into LA’s roster, they’ve relied on starter David Bingham ever since he arrived from the San Jose Earthquakes for the 2018 season. Homegrown signing Eric Lopez and Justin Vom Steeg are both in back-up roles and yet to log any MLS minutes.
