He’s already emerged as one of Major League Soccer’s most talented young players, but Brenden Aaronson’s performance at the MLS is Back Tournament has really opened eyes, especially among European suitors.


According to a report from German outlet Bild, the 19-year-old Philadelphia Union midfielder is on the summer wish list of Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach. The club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, has identified Aaronson as one of three young players he’d like to sign ahead of the next season. The Homegrown midfielder is joined by Barcelona’s Pedri, a 17-year-old attacking midfielder, and 16-year-old Benicio Baker-Boaitey from West Ham.

Aaronson is a big reason why the Union are through to the MLS is Back Tournament semifinals. This sublime turn and pass on Sergio Santos’ second goal helped Philadelphia book its ticket with a 3-1 win over Sporting Kansas City in the quarterfinals.

After that game, Aaronson acknowledged the swirling speculation, but said he has a singular focus right now.


"I’ve seen some of the stuff going around but that’s just not – I don't really like to pay attention to that stuff because I'm in a tournament and I want to play the best that I can, and that kind of stuff can get into young kids, but didn't for me," he said in the post-match press conference. "And I just went out and tried to play my game and I didn't worry about that kind of stuff. All I want to do is win for the team and help my team win.”
