The story of FC Cincinnati's unlikely super-fan Zaidan Tunechi

Zaidan Tunechi - FC Cincinnati - Portrait

One of the biggest FC Cincinnati fans in the world has actually never been to Cincinnati.

WCPO's Laurel Pfahler has the great story of Zaidan Tunechi, a 19-year-old from Kumasi, Ghana, who decided five years ago to pledge undying loyalty to FC Cincy. An aspiring soccer player himself, Tunechi told Pfahler that he was drawn to a club that was just starting out and trying to make their name, like he is.

It's been his biggest passion ever since. To catch all the games, Tunechi makes a 40-minute walk from his home to the one bar in the vicinity that will stream games at the hours of the night they're airing in Ghana. Through his unlikely fandom, he's become connected with other FC Cincinnati supporters on social media, who have sent him gear and are brainstorming ways to get Tunechi out to the city to catch a match in person.

“I've begun to get big love from the team and the fans as well,” Tunechi told Pfahler. “People used to talk to me and tell me like, ’How did you get to like that team?’ I think once the club was established, I was notified two weeks later. Me being a youngster, I never loved a team or supported a team, and I think Cincinnati was sent to me by God and I think giving them my heart would be the best.”
