Toronto FC midfielder Ifunanyachi Achara’s promising rookie season came to an unceremonious end when the Nigerian suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the club announced Thursday. He is scheduled to have surgery July 7.
The 22-year-old was selected 25th overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft and was signed following a terrific preseason.
Achara continued his trajectory by scoring on his MLS debut, the late winner against New York City FC on March 7. It came after his apparent first goal was called back following Video Review.
Following news of his injury, Achara wrote in a tweet that he was confident of coming back even stronger.
I can’t put to words how I feel but the obstacles and victories are all part of the journey. I can only control my attitude and rehab. I’m working with the best people and will come back stronger. Thank you for all the kind messages 🖤🙏🏾 https://t.co/hzZyTWOhwF
