Andrew Farrell signs multi-year contract extension with New England Revolution

The sight of Andrew Farrell in a New England Revolution jersey won’t change anytime soon after the defender signed a new multi-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Since New England traded up in the 2013 SuperDraft to acquire Farrell, the University of Louisville product has made 221 appearances through the early days of his eighth professional season. Farrell, 28, leads all MLS outfield players in regular-season appearances and games started since entering the league.

“Andrew Farrell has been an outstanding player and person for the Revolution over the past seven years,” sporting director and head coach Bruce Arena said in a release. “He is a great leader and representative for our club, and has proved to be a durable and consistent player throughout his career. We are pleased that Andrew will remain a Revolution player for many years to come.”

Farrell, who’s played right back and center back before settling into the latter, has two goals and eight assists throughout his career. He’s a three-time Revolution Defender of the Year and was named an MLS All-Star in 2016 for the group’s matchup against Arsenal.

“I’m thrilled to sign this extension with the Revolution and to continue my career in New England,” Farrell said in a release. “I’ve always felt like New England was a second home for me, thanks in large part to the unwavering support of our fans over the years. Now with the new training facility, Bruce Arena and the coaching staff, and the roster they’ve put together, I’m more excited than ever to be a part of this club and build something special.”

Farrell spent much of his childhood living in Lima, Peru, where he became fluent in Spanish. At Louisville, he was named a First-Team All-American and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. He's also become a close partner with the Revolution’s Special Olympics Massachusetts Unified soccer team since 2016.
