Giovanni Reyna back in Borussia Dortmund squad ahead of trip to Wolfsburg

Gio Reyna - Dortmund - against 1. FC Union Berlin

UPDATE, May 22 — 1:52 pm ET: Giovanni Reyna has returned to full-team training and is back in the Borussia Dortmund squad ahead of a trip to Wolfsburg Saturday, ESPN reports.

Coach Lucien Favre, though, is unsure how much of a part, if any, he will play.

"We will see. He only trained yesterday and that was a light unit," he said.

Giovanni Reyna’s first Borussia Dortmund start will have to wait.

The NYCFC academy product and US men’s national team prospect was slated to feature for Dortmund Saturday morning in their Revierderby clash against Weston McKennie and FC Schalke 04.

However, the 17-year-old suffered an injury during warm-ups and was replaced in the XI by Belgian winger Thorgan Hazard.

Before the Schalke fixture, Reyna had made 11 appearances for Dortmund and registered one goal and one assist. He’s previously been an impact sub for manager Lucien Favre out wide, and will hope the injury isn’t too serious as the 2019-20 Bundesliga season enters a frenetic final push.

The Bundesliga match helped sweep in the return of high-level soccer during the COVID-19 pandemic, after Germany took aggressive measures to allow for games without fans. Teams have quarantined in hotels, and there’s comprehensive social-distancing measures in place to preserve player, coach and staff safety.
