Could Carlos Vela pass LAFC teammate Bradley Wright-Phillips as the quickest to 100 MLS goals?

Bradley Wright-Phillips took the fewest matches to reach 100 goals in MLS history. But his record may be safe only as long as the league remains on its current COVID-19 hiatus.

Both Carlos Vela, Wright-Phillips' current LAFC teammate, and Atlanta United's Josef Martinez are within shouting distance of BWP's mark, which he reached during the 2018 season with the New York Red Bulls

Fastest to 100 MLS Goals

  1. Bradley Wright-Phillips (159 games)
  2. Taylor Twellman (174 games)
  3. Chris Wondolowski (210 games)
  4. Ante Razov (217 games)
  5. Landon Donovan (221 games)

  • Josef Martinez: 77 goals/84 games
  • Carlos Vela: 60 goals/61 games

Based on past production, Vela could reach the mark within roughly 40 games, well short of two full seasons of action. The question is whether he can keep up his prolific rate.

Meanwhile, Martinez could get there within less than a full season's worth of appearances, having scored at least 27 goals in each of his past two seasons. It originally appeared the 26-year-old Venezuelan would be done for the season after tearing his ACL on opening night at Nashville SC, but the season pause could introduce the possibility of a return.
