US men's national team roster for Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifying revealed

The United States Under-23 national team roster for 2020 Olympic qualifying is out, as head coach Jason Kreis on Sunday night revealed his 20-player squad for the tournament taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico from March 20–April 1.

The roster features 15 MLS-based players, with Real Salt LakeFC Dallas, and the Philadelphia Union each sending three players apiece. The San Jose Earthquakes have two players on the roster, while four more MLS teams account for the four remaining domestic players. RSL also have two more foreign-based alumni on the roster in attackers Richie Ledezma and Sebastian Saucedo. In addition to those two, three more foreign-based players were permitted to join the U-23s for qualifying.

The roster features 10 players who have been capped for the senior US national team and 12 who have represented the United States at a youth World Cup. Three players on the squad – defender Reggie Cannon, midfielder Djordje Mihailovic and forward Jonathan Lewis – were part of the USMNT squad that reached the 2019 Gold Cup final.

The United States was drawn in the four-team Group A for the initial stage of the tournament. They will open March 20 against Costa Rica, before facing the Dominican Republic on March 23 and Mexico on March 26. The top two teams in the group will advance to the semifinals on March 30, with the winners of those games qualifying for Tokyo 2020. Group B of the tournament contains Honduras, Canada, El Salvador and Haiti.

The US have not qualified for the men's Olympic soccer tournament since 2008, falling in the group stage in 2012 qualifying and in the semifinals of the 2016 qualifying tournament.
