D.C. United officially announced the signing of Estonian forward Erik Sorga on a permanent transfer from FC Flora Tallinn on Saturday, after he initially signed for the team's USL Championship affiliate, Loudoun United FC, on Jan. 8.

Sorga, 20, was a prolific goalscorer for Flora in the Estonian Meistriliiga, where he helped the team to league titles in 2017 and 2019. He was the team and league golden boot winner in 2019 after scoring 31 goals. He carried that form into preseason with D.C., scoring his first goal for the Black-and-Red in a 1-1 friendly draw against Nashville SC on Feb. 19.

“Erik has impressed the coaching staff in preseason training since joining Loudoun United earlier this year,” Dave Kasper, D.C. United general manager and VP of soccer operations, said in a team statement. “He was a proven goalscorer in the Estonian league and has represented his country at the senior international level. At only 20 years old, we’re excited about his potential and we’re hoping to create a pathway for him to become a successful attacking threat in MLS for years to come.”

In total, Sorga has tallied 78 goals and nine assists in 91 appearances across three years in his home country. He made his national team debut in June 2019 and scored his first international goal against Belarus on Sept. 6, 2019. He currently has six appearances for Estonia, five of them in Euro 2020 qualifying, and the goal against Belarus is his only one for the national team to date.
