After reports surfaced earlier this winter of Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric being linked to D.C. United, Inter Miami CF is now also connected to the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalist.

A report from Spanish outlet Marca outlines that the MLS expansion side has identified Modric as a target, mindful of how his contract at Real Madrid ends in 2021. At that point, itā€™d be far easier for Inter Miami to swoop in and land the 34-year-old as he looks for his next chapter. In all likelihood, a player of Modricā€™s quality would require a Designated Player slot.

Modricā€™s career began at Croatian development powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb, prompting a move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur. The tempo-setting midfielder has been at Real Madrid since 2012, where heā€™s contributed to four UEFA Champions League winning-sides and as many FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Modricā€™s most-notable achievement might be winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or after helping his native Croatia reach the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. On the international scene, he has 16 goals and 20 assists in 124 appearances ranging from 2006 to present.

Thereā€™s been no shortage of high-profile players linked to Inter Miami ahead of their 2020 season, ranging from Paris-Saint Germain forward Edison Cavani to Club America forward Roger Martinez and others. The city, new project, owner David Beckham and other factors all contribute to the links.

Inter Miami will begin their inaugural MLS season March 1 at LAFC, before opening at Fort Lauderdale Stadium March 14 against the LA Galaxy.
