MLS Preseason 2020: Minnesota United FC storm past Florida International University with 5-0 win

Mason Toye – Minnesota United – goal celebration

Minnesota United FC, as expected, comprehensively won their first preseason game of 2020, recording a 5-0 win over NCAA side Florida International University on Saturday afternoon in Melbourne, Florida.

A brace from Mason Toye led the way, while Kevin Molino, Marlon Hairston and 2020 MLS SuperDraft selection Andrew Booth also scored. Currently in their spring season, FIU recently saw head coach Kevin Nylen depart to take on an identical role at Boston University.

Of note from a Minnesota perspective, goalkeeper Tyler Miller made his debut after his rights were acquired via trade from LAFC. Toye also strengthened his case for a starting spot, only four days after the Loons signed Paraguayan forward Luis Amarilla on loan from Argentine side Velez Sarsfield.

Tougher tests await Minnesota in preseason, as their Florida leg includes matchups against USL Championship sides Charleston Battery (Feb. 5) and Miami FC (Feb. 8). Theyā€™ll then head to Portland as part of a preseason tournament the Timbers are hosting.
