New York City FC signs Icelandic defender Gudmundur Thorarinsson

New York City FC have signed Icelandic international defender Gudmundur Thorarinsson, the club announced Tuesday.

Thorarinsson, 27, will make the move to MLS after spending the last three seasons with Swedish side IFK Norrkoping, where he netted four goals in 84 appearances. His professional career thus far has also included stops in Norway, Denmark and his native Iceland. He also has five senior International caps for Iceland since 2014.

Thorarinsson's primary position is left back, but he's also capable of playing as a central midfielder.

"Gudmundur is a talented player and is a smart footballer on the pitch," NYCFC head coach Ronny Deila said in a club release. "He's versatile and his technique on the ball in very good, which is a tremendous fit for our system. He is also a competitor and goes about business in a professional way. I've heard nothing but great things about him as an individual and I'm really excited to welcome him to our team ahead of the season."

Thorainsson's talents aren't just limited to the soccer field, either. He's a well-known singer in his home country and even competed in Iceland's annual Songvakeppnin competition that determines their representative for the Eurovision Song Contest
